The above detail from "Soul Machine" shows the silvered texture of the top left section. The painting is assembled from three stretched canvas shapes. The lines are also silver tones, redefined with a bright silver dash, like a center line.
These paintings were photographed using available gallery light during their exhibition at The Freedman Gallery, Albright College, Reading Pa, in 2006.
The paintings and frames were gratifyingly technical to make. They are reminiscent of Frank Stella's late stripe paintings.
The structures were built prior to any painting design. This way I could maintain expressive spontanaity and invention. Their imagery evolved from their form. "Soul Machine" seems to have two winged elements set against a lightless void. |
